You want your cookies to look great and maintain the shapes of the cutters but it's not always that easy. In this guide we'll cover some topics on how to use your cookie cutter to get perfect shapes.
First of all let's take a look at the different types of materials that are used to make cutters together with their pros and cons.
Plastic Cookie Cutters :
They are cheap, usually less than 5 bucks.
They come in a variety of colors.
They are flexible so it's easy to remove your dough from small parts of the cutter.
They can be used to make custom cutters using 3D printers.
Sometimes custom made cutters can be rough so that will not always give you perfect shapes.
Stainless Steel Cookie Cutters :
They are not flexible so they won't lose their shape over time.
The edges of your cutouts will be more perfect.
There's only one disadvantage with this; they can rust over time.
Copper Cookie Cutters
Just like those made with stainless steel, they are not flexible.

Now that we've covered the different type of materials that are used to make cookie cutters, let's see what are the best ones. Based on our experience, we would recommend using plastic. They are relatively cheap and today with 3D printing which is easily accessible you can make any custom shapes.
A tip to get the perfect shapes is that when you prepare you dough, you should roll it to a thickness of about 1/8 inch. Anything thicker than that and the shapes may not come out correctly. You should also make sure that you use a cutter that has a good depth.
The edges of the cutter is another factor to consider when buying one. Because the sharper it is, the easier it will be for you to cut out shapes from your dough. One suggestions we would give it to put some cooking oil on the edges of your cutter before using it. That will prevent your dough sticking to the cutter.
Another problem that many people get is that their dough tend to stick to the table top of their rolling pin. It's very easy to avoid this. All you have to do is sprinkle some flour powder on your table and rolling pin before working with your dough. They will never stick then.
